Canon 7D: One Step Use of the Quick Control AF Selection

Normally to select the focus point, I have to:

  1. Press on the AF-Point selection button at the top right on the back of the camera
  2. Use the Multi-Controller/Joystick to select the focusing point

I don't like the 2 step operations. It's too complicated for me! I'm not smart enough to deal with “complicated” operations in the heat of the moment. I have to deal with the subject, the camera and often the environment like looking behind my back to see if somebody will attack/steal…

Buried in the manual is my answer: page 217 and page 220 with the *3.

Canon 7D: C.FN I - 1: Exposure Level Increments

Canon 7D: C.FN I - 1: The exposure level increments. When you turn the main dial or the quick dial control, does the exposure change by half a stop or by third of a stop? Can you see the difference between half and a third of a stop? I can't, but some people claim that they do, especially the people that have their LCD monitor calibrated. Canon 7D: Firmware 1.2.5 is Available

Last week Canon pulled the Canon 7D firmware 1.2.5. Now it's ready and available at:

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/professional/products/professional_cameras/digital_slr_cameras/eos_7d#DriversAndSoftware

Canon always had a bad history of documenting all the changes that they've done in the firmware. This time, it's mostly dealing with problems writing to flash cards. Is it all? We don't know. Often Canon makes minor tweaks that they do not document but do improve the 7D.

Canon 7D firmware 1.2.5 pulled

Canon rumors announced the new version the Canon 7D firmware: 1.2.5. A few short hours later, Canon pulled that firmware from its websites.

The question is why, has Canon “unreleased” the firmware. That's because more than one person has complained that it has frozen something. It could be the computer with the installer or the camera itself.

Canon: P for Professional Mode

The standard joke is that P stands for Professional or Perfect mode. Actually on Pentax, it's great! Pentax has the Hyper Mode where the front wheel adjusts the diaphragm, the rear wheel adjusts the shutter speed. Combined with the “proper” AutoISO of a range ISO100 to ISO800, you are all set. It's fast and very good, close to excellent.

So back to the Professional mode. This weekend, for the first time with Canon, I used the Perfect mode. It's not bad! Perfect? No. Professional? Depends on who you ask. It has a strong tendency toward the higher shutter speed and the wider aperture. Not too bad of a choice, I do the other way around, normally I'm in the A, for amateur or aperture, and let the Canon set the shutter speed.

Canon: White Balance

How do you set the white balance? AWB, the automatic white balance, sunny, cloudy, or flash… The AWB mode will let the computer (oops the camera) do a quick analysis and decide.

The purpose of the white balance is to find the temperature of the light, so what looks white to the eyes will be white in the photo.

Now here's the problem: Do you care? Should you care? “I shoot raw, why should I care?”

My answer is: “That depends!” Talk about waffling, but it's true, that depends.

  1. Raw outdoor: who cares.

Canon 7D ISO vs. Noise Test

Yesterday, I was at Reifel, busy minding my own business and whenever there was a photographer, “Hi” and I moved along.

Then this guy accosted me from behind, asking me about my setup. He also had a Canon 7D but with a Canon 100-400L while I had my Sigma 120-400. I don't remember how the conversation went but he ended up saying that Canon really screwed-up. The best ISO is 160 then 320… and not 200 or 100 blah, blah… I should set mine blah, blah…

Never heard about it. So decided to look into it. There may be something to it.

This Lens is Soft

Canon Rumors in conjunction with Lens Rentals have written a long article on:

Lens Rental, like their name says, rent lenses for Canon, Nikon… They have a fairly high traffic and a big turnover. People rent the lens for the weekend or a few days… and inevitably, people complain that the lens, they just rented, is a dude.

Canon 7D: Forgotten Copyrights Settings

Most people tend to set their copyrights through Lightroom during the import, then forget about it. The problems start when they forget (like me) to sometimes use the import preset. The best place to set the copyright is in your camera. Canon has a full menu setting for setting the name of the photographer and the details of the copyright.

For most of us, the copyright and the photographer's name should be the same, but for companies, it's not.
