Lightroom: Rearrange Keywords

Some people are very good at making decisions and at sticking to them. These people immediately decide on some keywords and that's it, no more changes. I can't. I often have to go back to add more keywords, to change some keywords or even to delete some keywords. Lightroom does not have an automatic way of changing, rearranging and reorganizing keywords, but it is only a 2 step process.

If you need to do change more than one keyword, you should do it one keyword at a time. All the operations should be done in the Grid view.

What's the purpose of keywords?

The purpose is to find the photos among the thousands of photos in your catalog. It can be for you or it can be for customers or it can be for internet searches.

The keywords are associated with a photo to describe:

  • subject matter
  • status
  • style
  • use

The simplest way of creating keywords is just add another keyword when you need it. The problem with just adding them on the fly without any structure is fine for the first few dozen keywords. Then it becomes unwieldy when it becomes thousands.

The “cleanest” way is to create base categories, then expand these various categories.

First: Always fill in the IPTC information. The problem, with the IPTC information, is that you can't search for it! The IPTC search is so limited that I find it useless. It's only possible to search if you already know the exact word and you cannot select in which IPTC field.

Metadata Fields Clarifications

Taking the photo today is easy. The real problem, especially with stock, is finding the photo or finding the “right” photo. Many organizations have tried, and done their own variation. Today the most popular system is the International Press Telecommunication Council, IPTC for short. All that data is called the metadata.

The new version of Lightroom 3.x expands the IPTC supports and many other legacy software/standards. Here are some explanations and clarifications:

Lightroom: Metadata IPTC Equivalents

Lightroom has all the metadata that you need, but if you use different software, or different organizations, it doesn't work. They don't match. There are so many types, each software call it differently.

There's the famous IPTC, then there's also Adobe with the XMP. Even with Adobe the names/title are different between Lightroom and Photoshop. Here are of the some of the equivalents:

Keywording must be the least popular part of any photographer's workflow. The problem is that there are about 60 billion photos on the web! Give or take a couple of billions of photos. Facebook is the number one with 35 billion photos, 220 million new photos every week and serving over 550 thousands photos per second. Over 95 million photos in the various "big" stock agencies.

  • The right keywords and you can retrieve your photo. The right keywords and the photo-buyers will find your photos.
  • If people can't find your photos, they won't buy your photos. It's that simple.
