Lightroom: Kind Of

A vacuum cleaner is something that uses a fan to push air out to create some vacuum to suck up dust and dirt. So what's that got to do with Lightroom? You see, Lightroom is a software that runs on a computer.

Most computers have many fans, my workstation has five fans. Four of the fans pull air out and the fifth fan push air in.

I Copy Everything

The photography business is all about copying what the other does. The current “fad” is HDR. In the “good old days”, every landscape was taken with 2 to 3 color polarizer. Now, all the weddings are “documentary style”… Photographers often get a friend or a family member to call their competition and ask for the prices… then copy it almost exactly.

The best that happened to me was: when people shoot from over my shoulder, literally, which not too difficult since I'm often on my knees. The worst was just a week ago, when a “turkey” instead of going behind me, just went straight in front when I had to shame him to get him to move. There are magazines, conferences… that show you how copy other successful photographers.

What the duck has captured it very well, except the most important, what makes me unique and that nobody can copy.

Kodak: the Debacle and the BS

By now, you must have heard that Kodak has filed for bankruptcy. All the noise from the web is that Kodak is a bankrupt company because, although they invented many of the digital technology, they were not nimble enough… Those are mostly people that repeat what everybody else copied from the web. The problem is that these people don't have a “long enough” memory. Kodak's problems started long, long before the digital area.

What The Duck has this great cartoon about “Kodak's death”

Here are the 3 main events that caused “Kodak's death”:

Most Photographers Do Not Understand

Yan of http://yanphoto.com wrote a blog post: sick of it, in which she states how hard the life of a photographer is: no business, dead… Her photos are good, so why can't she get any work?

Because like most photographers, she doesn't understand the business of photography. First the facts, then the solutions.

  • Photography is booming
  • Photography is exploding.

Trey Ratcliff — Stuck in Customs Controversy

Nikon announced their Nikon D4 in January 2012. The next day, Trey Ratcliff of Stuck in customs wrote the following blog post DSLRs are a dying breed – 3rd Gen Cameras are the Future in which he slams Nikon/Canon and the big/standard dSLRs.

Please note that:

  • Stuck in customs has 1+ million visitors per month
  • Trey Ratcliff sales were in the 7 figures in 2011
  • Trey Ratcliff employs 11 part and full-time people (that's what he mentioned in Feb-2011 in an interview)

Trey announced that:

2012: Did You Update Your Copyright?

It's the new year, 2012. New year equals new resolutions but there are so many resolutions to forget from 2011. Here's a quick one that you can do right now and make us feel good as photographers, because we are asserting our rights.

Did you update your copyrights? It takes only from 5 to 15 minutes.

  1. In your camera: almost all “pro-summer” cameras and all “pro” cameras have a copyright menu item to set it up. Many “amateur” cameras also have it.

On the Canon 7D, it's in the MenuWrench 3Copyright Information

Year End 2011

It's almost the end of the year, 2011. Most websites will do two posts:

  1. The year in review
  2. Forecast for the next year

I'll save you time and money, but first the important part:

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

The year in review: don't you already know it? Didn't you live through it? In anyway in the big scheme of things, a lot happened, especially natural catastrophes that we still live with the consequences even today (I'm talking about photography):

Stuck In Customs: Stop Advertising in Photo Magazines

Trey Ratcliff of Stuck In Customs wrote an blog post: Stop Advertising in Photo Magazines – Head West to the Web. He spent $28,000 to advertise in 3 magazines and found that 2 of them were a complete waste.

He advertised in Popular Photography, Shutterbug and Photoshop User. Sales were dismal with Popular Photography and Shutterbug. Sales were very good with Photoshop User.

Are You a Coulda, Shoulda or a Happy Camper?

Last Saturday, I went to Reifel Bird Sanctuary, things didn't go well.

How Adobe is Shooting Itself in the Foot

A few weeks ago, Adobe announced that from now on, the upgrades will be only from the previous version of Photoshop and/or the Creative Suite. If people are a couple of version behind, that's too bad, you will have to do a buy a full version or get lost or…

Scott Kelby, of NPPA fame, wrote an open letter to Adobe to complaint about the upgrade policy.

I think that most people are missing the point.

  1. The prices vary a lot depending on the country and the markets.

Why Do They Do That?

I've never understood why people carry a lens hood mounted on their lens reversed like this woman? What's the point? The lens hood does 2 things:1. The lens hood protects the lens for accidental touching and from many accidents.2. The lens hood job is to minimize flare by stopping the bright rays of light from entering the lens from the side. It was essential in the old days of the SLRs before they invented lens coatings. The lens hood was mostly used in teles. I use mine on everything, be it wide angle, normal lenses and teles. But it's mostly to protect the lens since I do not use filters.

No Top 10 List For Me

One of the standard advice to a blogger do a “Top 10 List”. I've never like either doing or reading top 10 lists.

I always find these lists as superficial. It's usually a title followed by one or two sentences that do not explain anything.

When was the last time that a top 10 lists gave you the information that you needed? I can't remember one occurrence.

Finding a Profitable Niche

As a professional group, photographers move in a heard, they copy each other to the letter. The ultimate in copying each other is the huge number of photographers, by the thousands, that go to Yosemite to take the same photos as Ansel Adams. They go as far as going on the same date and at the same time in the, useless, hope that they will be able to duplicate Adams' fantastic work. The problem with these copycats is that they fail to realize that even with the same light, the same place ,and the same exposure they will never get the same prints as Ansel Adams. Ansel Adams' genius was in the darkroom, he was can easily be argued the best printer ever.

How to Specialize

With some many photographers, everybody screams at the top of their lungs that you should specialize. Notice that this is often coming from a generalist that specializes in pressing the shutter button.

Here's a guy that takes specializing to the nth degree: Martin Waugh of Liquid Sculpture. He lives in Oregon and makes a very good living making photos of water/liquid drop. Very nice, very profitable.

If you are looking for water drop photos or videos, he's your man.

Fireworks Blowout Sale

Yesterday was Halloween. There are a lot of stores that open just for a few weeks to sell fireworks for Halloween. PhatBoy had a Fireworks Blowout Sale. I don't think that they realized what it meant.
