SEO On The Cheap

Yesterday, I wrote a post called: SEO Misunderstandings explaining where was the SEO in the grand scheme of things. I also said:

I was at one of Matt Cutts talk and he explained it fairly well, I hope I can make it also clear.

Looking back at it, I don't think that I did such a good job. I need to further expand and explain. There are a few things that you should do, not for Google or the SEO but for the user. Please note that it's Google's interest in having your website do well.

1. Google has published: Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide in PDF format.¹

2. Create unique, accurate page titles. Think about it, how do you feel when you've been “conned” into clicking a link that you thought would interest you.

   On this website, the title “SEO On The Cheap” will never be used by another web page. I think that by the end of this article you will agree that my title is accurate. It's about SEO and that won't cost you either anything or be real cheap. Please note that you don't have to go back and change your whole website, you can start with next web post.

3. Create a good description of your web page. The description doesn't have to be a summary of what's in your web page. The description could be a question, a tease to entice the user to come and visit. But don't lie, don't make it up and make sure that your web page will deliver.

   The description of this web page is: “3 easy, simple and cheap ways of improving your rankings and the user experience without spending much time or money!”

4. Make sure that the web page name, the URL, matches the title.

   So for example instead of this web page having a URL of: http://www.foto-biz.com/node/823, the name is: http://www.foto-biz.com/Seo/Seo-on-the-cheap. The category is Seo and the title is: Seo On The Cheap. I use “-” and not “_”. The URL is related to the title. When people see this URL, they will have a good idea if they are interested in clicking on the link.
