Lightroom — Importing Hierarchical Keywords

Hierarchical keywords allows you to organize the information such as: "Canada | British Columbia | Vancouver" This mean that the photo is made in:

  1. The country: Canada
  2. The province: British Columbia
  3. The city: Vancouver

I like that way of organizing the keywords, because by just selecting Vancouver, Lightroom will enter for me the hierarchy Canada, British Columbia. I have only entered Vancouver, but I can easily retrieve all the photos that belongs to Canada.

  • You can import the keywords from other catalogs or from ASCII text files.
  • I use spreadsheets with TAB separated columns.

The indentation in Excel will add the correct number of tabs. You can create the same file as a text file with Notepad on Windows or Vi on Mac with TABs to mark the indentation and the hierarch. The hierarchy looks like:

  [Geography]
    Africa
      Algeria
      Angola
      Benin
      ....

Why is Geography surrounded by square brackets?

The square brackets tell Lightroom that the keyword is a category. You can't associate the category Geography to a photo, but you can associate the category Africa or the category Angola to a photo. The category does not have to be in the first indentation.
