Lightroom — Deleting Keywords

Lightroom: Deleting Keywords

I have imported all whole bunch of new keywords, then OOPS! I realized that I imported over a 1000 wrong keywords. It was the wrong file! There are 3 alternatives:

Delete 1 keyword at a time

To delete a keyword is very simple in the Library module, select the keyword to be deleted from the list, right click and delete.

Lightroom: Delete a Single Keyword
Lightroom: Delete A Single Keyword

Delete all unused keywords

But doing it 1000 times is very time consuming and extremely painful. There is another way for Lightroom to delete your keywords. Purge Unused Keywords from the Metadata menu.

Lightroom: Delete All Unused Keyword
Lightroom: Delete All Unused Keyword
  • Purge Unused Keywords will not only delete the new keywords imported, but also all keywords not associated with a photo.
  • This has the potential of deleting many more keywords than what you intended.

Restore from backup

The proper way of importing a full batch of keyword, or any major other operation is to first to do a backup of the Lightroom catalog, and if you don't like the result of the major operation, then restore from the backup.

When you are done, finished and happy with the batch operation results, it's a good idea to:

  1. Make a new backup of your Lightroom catalog.
  2. Relaunch and Optimize your Lightroom catalog.
