2008 Foto-Biz Blog Summary Part 1

If you operate a photography business, and you do not have some kind of regular blog, regular does not mean daily but at least weekly, the more often the better, you are seriously holding back your business.

Even when I do not get new clients from the blog, my existing clients read my blog and make comments about this or that article. I have had more extra job from existing clients because of the blog.

Do you know who's coming to your blog? How do they come? Yes, it's through the Internet but here are some of my stats:

Operating Systems Version Percent
Total Windows 62.3 %

Windows 2000 0.8 %

Total BSD 0 %
FreeBSD 0 %
Total Others 4.4 %
Unknown 4.4 %
Symbian OS 0 %

0% does not mean 0 users, but less than 0.1%

What do all these numbers mean?

  1. Almost 2/3rd of the people reading my blog are Windows users, and not Mac. If I want to do some technical article, it will have be Windows focused.
  2. 1/5th of my readers are Mac. What about insulting them as fanatics? Don't forget that when talking Windows vs. Mac, we are talking religious wars! So let's not start
  3. The most surprising stat is that 11% of my readers are Linux users.
  4. There is even a few mobile phone readers: Windows CE and Symbian OS
  5. Your blog or website must be viewable by all these readers

This means:

  • No fancy template that will only work with some Internet browser or some specific version of a specific Internet browser, such as Internet Explorer 6. And I am not discussing the usability issue or the aesthetics.
  • Very simple javascripts. Many of the more complicated javascripts like drop down menus will not work with older version of Windows or Mac.
  • The newer OS versions will have screen of 1280 wide or more.
  • The older OS versions will have screen of 1024 wide or less.
  • Most of the older OS versions do not connect to the Internet through high speed connection, but instead use standard phone lines.

Think about these stats when designing your photo website or your photo blog.
