Canon: MicroAdjustment Not Working
I received an email from Tatyana. Here's the key extract for her email.
I've tried to follow your instructions for the Micro-Adjustment. I can't get it to work, I still have some front-focusing…
BTW, I expected Tatyana to be either from Russia or Central Europe but she is from the Netherlands.
My instructions are at: C.Fn III -5 - AF Microadjustment. The Micro-Adjustment is controlled by the C.Fn III-5 - AF Microadjustment. After an exchange of a couple of emails, I found that instead of focusing and taking the photo through the viewfinder. She tried to make the procedure much faster by using the Live View.

Canon 7D: C.Fn III -5 - AF Microadjustment
The problem with using the Live View for focusing is that Live View doesn't use the AF sensor, it uses contrast measurement instead of the “standard” AF module.
Tatyana solved her problem by switching from the Live View to the regular viewfinder. The MA is to account for the variance in manufacturing of the camera and the lens. So why would it be different between the Live View and the viewfinder but only for some people. Again it is because of the differences in the tolerance and the variations in the manufacturing of the camera and of the lenses.
Live View is a completely different “beast” that is much more restricted
- There's only one metering mode in Live View: Evaluative Metering but exposure compensation is available.
- In continuous shooting, fast or slow, the exposure is set only for the first shot. The same exposure will be applied to all the other photos, as long as your finger is on the shutter.
