Canon 7D: C.Fn III -6 Select AF area selection mode

The Canon 7D has 6 different focusing area modes. You can select which of the 5 auto focus area mode you want enabled:

  1. The full 19 auto focus points area
  2. The zone focus AF area
  3. The single focus point with expansion AF area
  4. The single focus point AF area
  5. The spot AF area

Where the 6th focusing mode? Face recognition AF area in live view mode only.

So why not have all of them enabled? My 2 main auto focus modes are the zone AF and the single point AF. So when I switch AF modes, it's between these 2 modes. It's faster for me, it's one or the other. I'm rarely in the wrong mode.

  • Far away subject especially against busy backgrounds: Zone AF.
  • Closer work or I don't want to focus on the nearest portion of the zone: single point AF.
  • My preference is to have only 2 modes enabled: the zone focus and the single point.
  • I wish the face recognition mode was an option with the regular focusing modes instead of always choosing the closest focus point.
  • I wish the face recognition mode was significantly faster.
