Canon 7D: C.Fn III -4 Lens drive when AF impossible

How should the Canon 7D behave when it can't find the focus? Start again from the nearest to the far away or just give up?

0: Keep on hunting to try to find the focus. That's when you have the lens racking from close to far away. The speed will depend on the lens. Some lenses have a very long throw, especially the very long lenses, think BigMa 50-500mm . Depending on the light, the subject, the contrast, some lenses will go back and forth without finding focus.

1: Can't find the focus, abort the focusing operation immediately. Let the operator do a manual focus.

  • I don't like the setting of 1. My lenses are Canon with very quick and fast focus. So I prefer the setting of 0.
  • I have tried the setting of 1 and I don't like it. It immediately stops the trying to focus if it can't find it.
  • I use the setting of 0. I can always override the hunting of the focus by removing my thumb from the AF-ON button and doing the focus manually with my left hand.
