Do you want to use the auto focus point to follow the orientation of the camera without having to change the focus point manually?

  1. Disabled. If you hold the Canon 7D horizontally or vertically, the focus point will not change. That's the standard behaviour.
  2. Enable. You can select the point when the grip is up, and another point when the grip is down. And that's where the fun begin. Not only can you select the point depending on the orientation but also the AF selection mode. So it's possible to have single point AF when shooting horizontally, Zone AF when the grip is up, and AF point expansion when the grip is down.

Sounds fantastic and very flexible but it looks like I'm not holding the camera steady enough. It seems that I can't hold the camera straight horizontally when panning.

  • My setting is 0 meaning disabled.
  • I wanted to love it, but I have found that the tilt mechanism is too sensitive for me. I've found that any slight tilt, especially during hand-held panning when the Canon 7D would switch the focus point.
