Camera Advice

One of the most common questions in photography is: “Which camera should I get?” And somebody will pipe-in that you should buy this Nikon or that Canon because… Then you have all the people that give advice, that review cameras, that explain why this camera is so bad or this lens is so good that you will be as good as as a “pro”.

I already ranted about these “groupies” in Groupies and the D90. But now there are some people that go well over the top. Ken Rockwell of kenrockwell.com is a website that mostly specializes in Nikon. He general view is that there are too many pixels in cameras and Jpeg is good enough, no point in using RAW.

He decided to do a review of the Canon 7D. He said:

The Canon 7D adds Canon's first light meter to be sensitive to color. Every other Canon camera since the 1930s has only had a black-and-white light meter at best, unlike Nikon, which has had color meters in its better cameras since the 1990s.

You can forget about the 18MP. With a sensor this small, you're not really getting that much information, since the noise reduction system has to work overtime smudging out noise, even at daylight ISOs, if the 15MP Rebel T1i is any indication. If you want resolution, get a 5D Mark II.

Ken Rockwell has biases. Me too, I have my own biases1, but his “review” of the Canon 7D, is absolutely no review. The main problem with his “fake review” is that he presents it as facts when it's only an opinion based on who know what. Has he actually touched the Canon 7D? Has he had the Canon 7D in his hands? Doesn't look like it. Doesn't sound like it, but still he pans the camera. The same thing also happens on the camera forums such as DPReview where a whole bunch of people will claim that such lens is better than that that one, or this camera is terrible because it lacks… They've never used the … They still claim knowledge and expertise.

They forget that the proof is in the pudding. This is supposed to be about photography. Photos! Remember! and since this is supposed to be a blog about the business of being a photographer and a Lightroom Q & A.

  • A Lightroom problem with the Canon 7D, currently2, Lightroom or Photoshop ACR do not yet support the Canon 7D. It's in beta, but it's not ready yet.

1 Contrarily to everybody else my biases are based on experience, the age of the captain and the direction of the wind…
