Could Have Been A Canon 60D Review

It's then end of August 2010 and Canon has announced the Canon 60D, the replacement for the Canon 50D. I'm sure that you can find the specs everywhere on the web. Since so many people are criticizing Canon for the 60D. They must have access to it.

I want to do a full review, but I don't have one. And since this is not stopping any other “expert” from reviewing the 60D. I'm going to close my eyes and imagine holding it in my hands.

  • Please note that, like everybody else, no fact was harmed or checked in writing this review.
  • Any actual, true information would be due to the unlikely alignment of the planets with the moon.

The price is between the T2i/550D and the 7D. So it must have better features than the T2i, but not as good as the 7D. But it must have a couple of new features. That's for the professional curmudgeons.

  1. The body's only plastic. Why not have a titanium shell with plastic on it. And it should be waterproof
  2. It's only 18 megapixels! Why not 24+?
  3. The auto-focus has only 9 points. Like the 50D that it replaces or the 5DMk2. Why not the 19 points of the 7D with its dual CPUs?
  4. The auto-focus is too slow. I should be as fast as the 7D
  5. Serious banding at very low ISO
  6. Noise is terrible even at low ISO
  7. In serious need of a firmware upgrade
  8. Biggest error: no micro-adjustment for the lenses
  9. Only 5.3 frames per sec
  10. Too expensive, should be priced under $700

On the plus side:

  1. New articulated LCD panel
  2. “Proper” auto-iso with a range limiter
  3. New joystick that's a delight to use
  4. New video features

But it's all about:

Does the camera help or hinder when taking photos? A good camera will help you. But you will have to fight a bad camera for taking the photos. A good camera is a combination of ergonomics and technical prowess.

And now for the images: close you eyes, think photos of the T2i and of the 7D, pretty much the same. The sensor, the cpu and much of the firmware are common. Same image quality with the 60D.

  • I defy anybody to look at a photo and tell if it was taken by a T2i/550D or by a 60D or by a 7D.
  • Nikon doesn't have any camera in the 16 to 20 megapixels range as of: 30-Aug-2010. With the Canon 60D, Canon will be the only brand to have a full range of cameras at 18 megapixels.
  • It's the first time that Canon had to contend with the “sandwich” strategy. The 60D must be enticing enough for the T2i crowd, but not enough to jeopardize the 7D cash cow. Before the introduction of the 7D, the gap between the xxD and the 1D serie was huge.
  • I don't know enough about the video, so I can't judge.
  • The 60D is “somewhat optimized” to work with non-L lenses, smaller lenses and slower lenses. The 60D should not be judged on how it fares with a 70-200L/2.8 II or…
