What's the price of a photo? You can buy photos for $1 on iStockPhoto and use it forever for whatever you want. You can get millions of pictures for free on Flickr. So what's the price of a photo?

Please note that I am talking about the price of a photo and not it's worth.

Cost to produce a digital photo

  1. Camera = $250: Most of the photos available on the web are shot with small compact cameras. In 2007: 80 million new compact cameras sold, with Canon as #1 and Sony as #2.
  2. Time spent taking a photo = 1/250 of a second. Most people take these photos as they pass by.
  3. Distribution = $0
  4. Duplication = $0

That makes the total cost of a photo is between $0.01 to as low as $0.001: that's 1/10th of a cent. This means a 10 thousand percent to 100 thousand percent profit!

Most people take these photos: These photos are taken, they are not made.
