No Soliciting

I was at a small business seminar. You know the kind that tells us: here's step one, then step two… Follow the steps and you are guaranteed to succeed.

Step One: Start in the area that has a high concentration of potential clients and visit each business in the field you are targeting.

Present your business card, and introduce yourself to the receptionist. Don’t be put off by the “NO SOLICITING” signs or similar warnings to scare off the faint of heart. Ask who is responsible for buying your products or services and present an informational package.

— Guilty party to stay anonymous (His words, my emphasis)

Let me understand:

  1. “Piss off” your potential customers
  2. Insist and keep on “pissing off” your potential customers

You can row against the wind and the current, but it's always much easier to row with the wind at your back and the current helping you.

  • So why insist?
  • Very unlikely that they will give you the information you want and buy from you.
  • You will waste a lot of time, instead of dealing with people that are open to buying your product or service.

What are they thinking? Is this advice you want to follow?
