Marketing Secrets Revealed: The Scam

In the morning I do my blog rounds. I go to a bunch of websites that I find interesting. Not only they have to be interesting, they must be updated regularly, at least once a week. For the websites that are interesting but with only occasional updates, I make them come to me with RSS: Real Simple Syndication. I subscribe to the website and they send me the post when it's published.

The “marketing secrets revealed” is one of those that I received via RSS. Occasionally there's some very interesting stuff. The author offered a "FREE Marketing Secrets Revealed" in e-book format. Basically it's a PDF. He “only” asks for your name and email. Since I own my own domain, I can create aliases or pseudonyms for one time use. It's an email address that forwards the email to my real email address. Usually I delete the alias after that.

So I give a name, an email address and I expect an email with either the PDF attached or a link to download the PDF. Instead of that, I land into an order form where I can order for free a few of his “books”. They are kind of free, I only have to pay $$$$ for the shipping and handling…

It's much easier to sell to an existing customer than to a new customer. The existing customer knows you and trusts you. So market to your existing customers… Duh!
