Cost Cutting

The other day, I got a phone call from an existing customer. He wanted the same type of photo we did last time but much cheaper.

What do you mean cheaper? Last time, I already gave you a discount. I am far to close to the bone. Humm, Humm...

Let me think about it. Can get back to you by the end of the day? I will need to do couple of phone calls.

This gave me a little time to think and strategize.

  1. No print, they can do their own printing.
  2. I provide them with a CD of the TIFFs.
  3. Since I don't control the prints anymore, all the TIFFs must have my name & copyright with the website at the bottom left of all photos, clearly readable.
  1. I think that they bought an Epson R1900. How is it going to work? We'll see.
  2. I don't know if they will be saving any money on the printing.
  3. My bill was lot less, because there were no printing involved.
  4. I gave them another further 10% discount for providing them the TIFFs photos on CD with my name & copyright. It's "almost free" advertising.
  5. I had to spend some time explaining that since I didn't control the printing anymore and they were free to make as many prints as they wanted, my name must be placed on each photo. They eventually agreed.

It was a win/win.

  1. I did get paid less, but I worked less.
  2. I got one more job.
  3. I showed my customer how flexible I can be.
  4. In another three weeks, I will be calling them to find out how they are doing with the prints.
