Can I Sell These Photos?

Last week, I was at a presentation where some photographers displayed and projected their photos. Some were outstanding, better than anything I ever did. One guy spend 3 month tracking a tiger to get photos of the tiger in the sunset. I don't have the time or the patience to spend 3 month to make a photo. It was amazing. When the presentations were finished, we started chatting and he asked:

Can I sell these photos?

There are thousands of calendar publishers. There are thousands of cards/postcard publishers. There are hundred of posters publishers. We are not counting the book publishers, the magazines… Let's not talk about stock agencies and microstock agencies.

My answer was:

Those are amazing photos, but I think that you are asking the wrong question. You should be asking:

Where can I get the skills and resources to sell these photos?

Any photo that's not completely out of focus can be sold, the question is where and to who.

He kept on asking me question of how I started… I started with 2 books.

Are these book perfect, no, but it's enough to get you going. I think that the last printed edition of Rohn Engh is from 2003. Computers and microstocks have changed a lot, but the principle are the same. It would be nice if the 2010 photographer's market and writer's market were on CD but…

I'm NOT an Amazon affiliate. I get $0 commission if you buy any of the book mentioned.
