Being True To Yourself

The saying goes:

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck!

It doesn't matter that the duck thinks it's an eagle. The duck who thinks it's an eagle will try to behave like an eagle to be true to himself. But to me, it's a duck. If the duck promises me to make photos like an eagle, and can't deliver? What next?

Many photographers want to be true to themselves, but are not true to their customers. If you promise your customers a full wedding photo coverage, you'd better deliver. This means that you will need at least one assistant, you can't be everywhere at the same time.

Can you be truthful by "being who you are"? What does it mean? What the definition of being? Who will define "being who you are"? As people and especially photographers we are notoriously bad at judging ourselves. Look at your photographic portfolio, how much can you improve it by having somebody else review it? Usually a lot...

Instead of being true to yourself, why don't you try to be true to your customers.
