Baby On Board

Last night I was one of three photographers at a reception. Three photographers, three different clients covering the same people. We all know each other. I arrived first, unloaded my equipment, and started to make the rounds to find the best spots and the best angles. The other two guys arrive and Joe asks for my help to unload his SUV, a Land Rover LR3, which he left at the front. I go and help when I notice at the back the warning sign stuck on the rear window: Baby On Board

Me — I see that you have the baby sign in the rear window.
Him — Yes, Rebecca wanted it.
Me — What does it mean?
Him — It means that I drive with a baby in the back seat1.
Me — But you don't have a baby in the back seat.
Him — Rebecca likes it.

  1. It's one of my pet peeves.
  2. This is one of most meaningless thing to have on your car. What are they expecting? That if I will have an accident, I will see the sign and will swerve at the last second to crash on a lamp post instead?
  3. It's not true. Most of the times he drives the Land Rover and does not have the baby with him. It's false advertising or false claims...
  4. They think that they have a disease, an infirmity, aka a baby, that entitles them to rights that others don't have.

Are you doing the same with your customers? Are you claiming rights on your customers that you should not take for granted?

1 He almost said Duh! What do you expect, but did not dare since I was helping him.
