I was at a reception taking pictures when this guy (it's always a guy) came. He began gloating about his new Canon EOS1d MarkIII while I only had a small Canon G9.

Definition of an amateur photographer

According to Wikipedia an amateur is:

  • A person attached to a particular pursuit, study, or science as to music or painting; esp. one who cultivates any study or art, from taste or attachment, without pursuing it professionally.
  • Someone who pursues something part time, as a hobby or not very seriously
  • Someone who is inept.

Definition of a professional photographer

According to Wikipedia a professional is:

  • A professional can be either a person in a profession (certain types of skilled work requiring formal training/education) or in sports (a sportsman/sportswoman doing sports) for payment.

The Reception

  1. This guy did not get paid (I asked the host).
  2. He took very few pictures, maybe half a dozen.
  3. I took well over 100 successful pictures.
