Advertising vs. Marketing

I rarely talk about advertising and mostly write about marketing. What's the difference when it comes to your photography business?

  • Advertising: the purchase of time or space in a media. You can buy time on the radio, on the TV or... You are buying the time to show your information. You can buy space in a magazine, in the newspapers or on the Internet such as banners or Google to show your information. All in all you are paying for the exposure. The more "eye balls" the more you will be paying. To advertise you will have to pay.
  • Marketing: the activity of reaching and contacting your potential customers. Many of these activities do not cost any money. These include:
    1. Phone
    2. Email
    3. Networking
    4. Exhibits
    5. ...

Advertising is the more expensive part of marketing, but in many cases it does make sense. If you are a wedding photographer, advertising in wedding magazines can make sense, just like having a booth at the various bridal shows.

  • The more targeted marketing/advertising the more effective it will be.
  • The more often you target the same people, the better it is1.

1 Up to the point where you become a nuisance or that your emails end-up in the spam folder, never to be seen again.
