As I have written before in Discounts and in Discounts Discounts that I don't like to give discounts. I am very firm on that policy. I give "freebies" and extras but not discounts. So why did I give in April a 25% discounts to a customer?
Him — Why don't give me a 25% discount? There'll be 4 more photo shoots this year.
I've heard that fairy tale many times before. I give him the discount now and goodbye no further photo shoot.
Me — Ok, why don't you pay me for the 5 shoots now with the 25% discount?
Him — I'll have to get back to you.
I've heard that one so many times, I wasn't holding my breath. 3 days later:
Him — Ok, 25% off but we will pay you on a monthly basis.
Me – Great! but let's do it over 10 payments, it's easier for calculating the taxes.
Him — Ok, let's go ahead.
YeeHah! It's the first time a customer gives me a one year multi-shoot. So why did I get the customer to switch from 12 monthly payment to 10 payments?
- I didn't change from 12 monthly payment to 10 payments, I changed from monthly payments to 10 installments. This is for the contract. There are very important legal implications (at least in Canada and the US). Monthly payments imply that the photo shoot is a "job for hire". They will own all the copyrights. With installments, it is not a "job for hire", therefore I own the copyrights.
- I get paid quicker.
- The discount is slightly less. In fact the 25% discounts spread over 12 payments is the equivalent to almost 30% depending on how you calculate it. The 25% discounts spread over 10 payments is the equivalent to around 28% depending on how you calculate it.
YeeHah! My first yearly contract!
