Where's Photoshop CS 5.5

Mid-April 2011, Adobe announced the upgrade to the Creative Suite 5.5. I stupidly and innocently ASS-U-MEd that “Great!” there's a new version of Photoshop. I'll wait until it comes out to upgrade my old Photoshop CS3, version 10, that I haven't used in the last 3 years.

Unless I read the Adobe press release wrong, there's no Photoshop CS5.5. It's the Adobe Creative Suite that is updated to 5.5. I do not see any mention of any upgrade/improvement to Photoshop CS5.5 version 12.5. I can't find any comparison listing of Photoshop CS5 vs Photoshop CS5.5.

Canon vs Nikon: The Shootout

I was walking down this pathway taking photos with my Canon 7D, he raised his Nikon, and the duel started. Doesn't this looks like the "Gunfight at O.K. Corral"? It was cold, April and we were frozen. Look at the jackets, the mittens...

I would like to see his photo.

Lightroom: How To Find Virtual Copies

Lightroom has the concept of virtual copies. If you want change a photo to Black and White, that photo will be in Black and White in all the collections. If you can to change a photo only in one collection then you can create a Virtual Copy.

What about the existing virtual copies? Where are they? You need a Smart Collection to find them. The problem is that Lightroom doesn't have a filter for the virtual copies.

Lightroom: Virtual Copies

In Lightroom, you can very easily add photos to various collections, by just dragging and dropping the photos in the collections. The problem with that any change that you do to a photo is also done to the photo in all the other collections.

So if you change a photo to Black and White, that photo will be in Black and White in all collections. The solution is: Virtual Copy

The virtual copy allows Lightroom to deal with different processing for your taste.

Are You Paid What You Are Worth?

Most people think that they are not being paid what they are worth. In the early 1990s, Robert Half, the employment agency, did a study in the workplace asking people how they rated their own work performance, then asked the employer the same question. The result was (from memory):

  • 80%+ of the employees rated themselves as good and above
  • 60% of the employees were rated as average by their employers

We have a disconnect here. There are 2 reasons why you are not getting paid what you’re worth:

  1. You don't know what you are worth, or

Google is Changing Its Search Results

In February 2011, Google got shamed by JC Penny who cheated to be ranked in the top 5 websites for common words like dress, jeans…. I wrote about in SEO: How To Cheat JC Penney Style

Fast forward May 2011, and last week, I was talking with a Google engineer.

Wildlife Female Photographer

Lady with Canon 7D & Sigma BigmaShe uses a Canon with a Sigma lens. I'm not to sure, but I think that it's a “BigMa” the 50mm-500mm. There are not too many women photographers. The few that I know of either do weddings or babies. The vast majority of photographers are male. I can only think of 2 “famous” female photographers from before World War II:Imogen Cunningham Dorothea Lange There are many more, but they didn't become “famous”.Then starting around the 60s women started to break into photography, like Diane Arbus, Annie Leibovitch, Joyce Tenneson… The vast, vast majority of the photojournalists, nature photographers, landscape photographers and sport photographers are males. Where are the women? We need them! Why do we the men need them? Because women offer a different point of view, a different expression, a different sensibility…reifel-20110423-3993.jpg — Copyright © 2011 Syv Ritch: http://www.foto-biz.com/usageterms

Megapixels vs. Print Size

You just bought the latest Canikon at 18 megapixels or at 24 megapixels. How big of a print can you do? Almost unlimited. How can that be unlimited? Won't your photos become just dots? Actually that depends on a few of things:

  1. Viewing Distance
  2. Printing Process and Print Resolution
  3. Upsizing Resolution

Please note the order. It's the most important!

  1. Viewing Distance: Under 3 feet or under 1 meter, you should print at 300ppi. For a viewing distance of more than 3 feet, such as a print to be hanged on a wall, you should use 200ppi.

The Mardi Gras Indians

A group of New Orleans residents spent a lot of time and money creating very elaborate costumes for the Mardi Gras parade. And, of course, as they go down the streets in the parade, photographers take their photos. They want to be paid by the photographers. So they tried to copyright their costumes. The “Mardi Gras Indians” claim that it's not fair that others profit from their work. The problem is that clothing and costumes are not covered by copyrights.

Don't laugh, this happens to me regularly. At least twice a month.
